Community Awareness & Action

Prevention

  • Watch out for Boundary Violations
    • Perpetrators typically test limits through minor actions like unwanted touches, inappropriate comments, or repeated offers after a clear “no.” These behaviors, while not openly harmful, can become problematic when they make someone feel uncomfortable.
    • If you are on the receiving end, make sure to trust your instincts and act when something seems off
    • If you are an observer, look for signs of discomfort like tense body language and forced smiles.
    • Even if some behavior seems harmless or awkward, don’t brush it off. Call it out and set clear boundaries.
  • Sexual violence prevention:
    • Consent is:
      • Freely Given
      • Reversible: you can change your mind
      • Informed
      • Enthusiastic
      • Specific: info should be shared before engaging in sexual activity
  • Brave PEER educators: Brave PEER educators are trained students who educate peers on sexual violence prevention, healthy relationships, and demonstrate scenarios

Bystander Intervention

  • When you notice a situation happening, ACT!
  • Be direct: speak up in that situation and directly call out the person acting inappropriately to defuse the situation
  • Distract: If calling out the situation seems scary, you can also create a distraction to remove the uncomfortable person from the situation and prevent it from escalating
  • Gather Others: Sometimes, situations are handled better by those with more authority and expertise. On campus, this may be an RA, professor, or even GTPD.

Risk Reduction Techniques in Social Settings

  • Protect your drink
    • Do not leave your drink unattended
    • Drink from unopened containers or drinks you watch being made and poured
  • Know your limits
    • Keep track of how many drinks you have had
    • Be aware of your friends’ behavior
  • It is okay to lie
    • Sometimes to exit a situation, it’s okay to make up a lie
    • Never be obligated to stay in a situation that makes you feel uncomfortable or pressured
  • Be a good friend
    • Trust your instincts and be aware of your surroundings
