Current Graduate Projects
There are several projects that the Graduate Student Government (GSG) is working on this academic year. Your input is always welcomed, so please fell free to contact the respective chairs or the GSG President with any comments or recommendations you may have.
Student Health Insurance
There are short term and a long term concerns that need to be addressed.
Short Term Concerns: Out-of-pocket maximum increases 300%
In the spring of 2009, Pearce and Pearce increased the out-of-pocket maximum for policyholders from $2,500 to $10,000 per policy year. In an effort to reduce this out-of-pocket expense, it has been proposed that a premium increase of $87 be added to the Spring 2010 insurance fee charged to students at the start of the spring semester. If the Rider is by the Board of Regents passed this semester, it will be retroactive for the Fall semester.

Long Term Concerns: Ensuring that students needs are met
Mandatory health insurance with a hard waiver option was procured for GTAs and GRAs in Fall 2006. This contract will enter its fourth, and likely final, year in Fall 2009. Over the four years of the contract, we have seen steady erosion of benefit levels for graduate students with relatively modest premium increases. A consultant recently reviewed the University System of Georgia's needs for student health insurance. The GSG President is working closely with the other student representatives from the other colleges to determine how to proceed to ensure better health insurance.
Strategic Planning
The GSG President, Vice President and various other members from the Graduate Student Senate (GSS) is representing the voices of all graduate students with regards to the strategic planning that was launched on September 3rd with the investiture of President Peterson. Please feel free to attend any meetings and let your voices be known, or you may send your comments directly to the GSG President.
