Institute Wide Committees
Much of the power that students have comes from SGA's ability to appoint student representatives to the various institute-wide committees that comprise Georgia Tech's campus. Below is a brief description of all institute-wide committees. For detailed descriptions, please visit the Faculty Handbook.

IWC Committees - State of Georgia

The following committees are required by the State of Georgia and have specific requirements outlined below. These committees will often meet a few times a semester, based on the amount of business at hand. To serve on one of these committees is quite an honor for students due to its high importance in forming policy.

Academic Integrity Committee: View Minutes
Requirements: one student Junior or above class rank

The Student Academic Integrity Committee shall assess and benchmark the nature of academic misconduct at Georgia Tech. From those observations, is their responsibility to compare integrity at Georgia Tech and compare that to nationwide standards. Then, from those observations, make recommendations that could enhance the administration of the Student Honor Code at Georgia Tech.

Academic Services: View Minutes
Requirements: one student Junior or above class rank

This committee shall make recommendations to the general faculty concerning the policies and procedures of academically oriented functions, services, and facilities. (Library, Cont. Education, Computer/Research Center(s), etc).

Faculty Benefits Committee: View Minutes
Requirements: one student Junior or above class rank

The role of a student member of the Faculty Benefits Committee is to review institute policies on matters such as insurance, retirement, sick leave, etc, They shall give input on an annual review of the Institute’s policy on wage scales, working conditions, and other matters of similar nature. The committee seeks to promote both on and off the campus, the development of facilities for the benefits of Faculty and Staff members.

Faculty Honors Committee: View Minutes
Requirements: one student Junior or above class rank

This committee’s responsibility is to review the policy of the institute with regards to salary scales, tenure, teaching loads, and other matters pertaining to members of the General Faculty. The committee shall receive information, suggestions, or grievances, concerning any aspect of the institute operations or relations between or among faculty members

Statutes Committee: View Minutes
Requirements: one student Junior or above class rank

This committee is responsible for any changes or amendments to the current statutes and bylaws, it is also review any current administrative manuals, regulations, and catalogs, and make recommendations to assure those items are in accordance with the current statutes and bylaws.

Student Academic and Financial Affairs: View Minutes
Requirements: two students Junior or above class rank

The role of this committee and its members is to annually review the system of academic advisement, and make recommendations to the general faculty. This includes policy governing academic standing and qualifications for students. Members are also responsible for recommendations regarding admission, readmission, financial aid, career planning, orientation, and shall approve all intercollegiate schedules of extracurricular activities, and granting absences from classes for institutional functions.

Student Activities Committee: View Minutes
Requirements: two students Junior or above class rank

The role of this committee is to independently define grievances, suggestions, or criticisms concerning any matter relevant to the institute, Once identified, those issues will later be presented to the correct vehicles of action (individuals, committees, faculty, student government (undergrad/graduate). The committee shall arrange for and conduct hearings for students wishing a reconsideration of a ruling against them by the judicial branch of student government.

Student Computer Ownership Committee: View Minutes
Requirements: two students, one freshman student, and other student of no designation

This committee shall define and periodically review the specifications for a minimally configured student computer. It shall also originate or receive all requests to update the standard software suite used by Georgia Tech. Additionally; it shall make other recommendations to the general faculty in regards to computer use, and the Student Computer Ownership Policy.

Student Honor Committee: View Minutes
Requirements: six students Junior or above class rank

This committee shall consist of twelve members of the Corps of Instruction elected from the Academic Faculty, six undergraduate students with at least junior standing elected by the Student Council, and three graduate students elected by the Graduate Student Senate. The Chair shall be elected annually by the Committee from among the Academic Faculty members. The Secretary shall be appointed by the Chair from among the other Committee members. Each case referred to this committee involving alleged dishonesty in academic matters on the part of a student shall be heard and decided by a hearing panel formed from the committee members.

Student Regulations Committee: View Minutes
Requirements: one student Junior or above class rank

Members of this committee shall create or receive all proposed changes/amendments to institutional changes pertaining to the institutional regulations placed on the student body (graduate and undergraduate). This committee shall define the official policy of the Institute concerning acceptable student behavior and academic honesty (including offenses and penalties).

Undergraduate Curriculum: View Minutes
Requirements: one student Junior or above class rank

A student member of the undergraduate curriculum committee shall recommend to the academic faculty the requirements for all undergraduate degrees and all proposals for changes in undergraduate degree requirements and curricula. It shall evaluate all new undergraduate courses and degree programs of each department. This committee shall rule on requests and appeals by undergraduate students for exceptions to established rules and regulations.

Welfare and Security Committee: View Minutes
Requirements: two students Junior or above class rank

This committee shall annually review and make recommendations to the General Faculty concerning the policies and procedures governing such institutional functions as those concerned with health, safety, and general welfare of the Georgia Tech student body. These recommendations may concern the well being of students or the physical safety of Georgia Tech’s campus.

The following committees have been formed by the Georgia Institute of Technology in order to shape policy regarding campus-wide topics. Campus Recreation Advisory Board: View Minutes
Requirements: Should have familiarity with the CRC and have previous experience with SGA.

The CRC Advisory Board meets twice a semester. The delegate to this committee should bring issues and suggestions to the board meetings so they can be addressed. This position is one of the communication links between SGA and the CRC.

Classroom Advocacy: View Minutes
Requirements: none

Counseling Center Advisory Board: View Minutes
Requirements: Should be a member of SGA and have an interest in the issues that the Counseling Center promotes.

The Counseling Center Advisory Board meets approximately once a semester. The Board serves in an advisory role for the Counseling Center. The committee members serve as "eyes and ears" for the center, gauging the needs of the campus from their perspective.

Earth Day Committee: View Minutes
Requirements: Appointee should be a member of SGA and have an interest in environmental affairs.

The Earth Day Committee hosts the largest Earth Day celebration in Atlanta. Different environmental organizations are invited to campus to share information with students, faculty, and staff. Further information is available at http://www.earthday.gatech.edu.

The Housing Priorities Committee meets three or four times around mid September or early October. The purpose of the meeting is to review the room selection process and implement any revisions that will enhance the process for fall 2006.

Requirements: none

The Radio Communications Board provides oversight for WREK. It elects the General Manager and the Business Manager, and approves the appointment of the Chief Engineer. RCB members make decisions about major officers and advise in all matters financial. It generally meets once or twice a semester. Delegates should have interest in and some knowledge of radio and WREK.

The scope of the Welfare and Security Committee is rather broad. It has focused on issues of general concern to the Faculty including parking, transportation, emergency response plans, low speed vehicles (golf carts) and automated external defibrillators most recently. The student representative brings a student perspective to the committee. The committee meets approximately twice a semester.
